Car forms one of the essential requirements of one’s lifestyle today. They are a convenient and safe mode of commutation for all in less time. For a car, its battery is the most crucial part of its smooth start and driving performance. It sends power from the starter motor to the spark plugs, igniting the fuel, while giving power to other systems as well. The various parts of a vehicle that runs by a car battery are:

  • Air conditioning
  • Radio
  • Lights
  • Alarm System

The various reasons for a dead battery are:

  • Human Error: This is the most common factor in draining the complete battery of the car. Accidentally if you have left the car lights on for a long duration of time/overnight, the car battery will be completely drained out resulting in a dead battery.

  • Parasitic Drain: This happens due to the components of the vehicle continuing to run after the key is turned off. Some of this is normal as your battery delivers some power to keep the clock, security alarms, etc operational at all times. However, in case of faulty wiring, poor installation, and defective fuses, the parasitic drain can exceed the normal limit and thus, deplete the battery.

  • Faulty Charging: If your battery is not getting charged completely, you may experience a dead battery even while you are driving. Many cars supply power to the lights, radio, and other systems and thus, results in complete drain out of the battery of it is not done properly.

  • Defective Alternator: A car alternator recharges the battery and powers certain electrical systems like lights, radio, AC, and automatic windows. In case of a bad alternator diode, the battery can completely drain.

  • Extreme Temperatures: Whether the weather is extremely hot or extremely cold, they can cause lead sulphate crystals to build-up. In the case of non-adherence to this condition, the sulphate build-up can damage the long-term battery life.

  • Excessive Short Drives: A car takes maximum power from the battery to start. And several short drives can drain out the battery power way before than expected.

  • Old Battery: The most-simple way of judging the situation is to know the age of the battery. If it is an old battery, it will not hold a full charge well.

The Solutions for a Dead Battery

The various solutions might help you deal with a dead battery situation at your end.

  • Jumpstart your car:

  • Take out your jumper cables
    • Place both vehicles in neutral and shut off the ignition of both the cars
    • Attach one of the red clips to the positive terminal of your battery and the other red clip to the positive terminal of the other car
    • Attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal on the other battery and the last black clip to an unpainted metal surface on your car that isn’t near the battery
    • Try to start your vehicle

  • Distilled Water: If the electrolyte level is low, add distilled water might be enough to fully-submerge the plates and enable a more reaction area.

  • Installing a New Car Battery: Even after trying this and showing the car to a mechanic, the car battery cannot be revived, go for a brand new one for your car. In normal course also one should go for a battery replacement every 3-4 years for the smooth functioning of the car.

The battery might look very small, but it provides huge power to the car to run smoothly.
